31 Days of Favorite Quotes: The Gift of the Upward Glance

I shared this quote from Eric Sloane’s Weather Book on Instagram the other day, as the Charlotte Mason IRL community has Nature Lore as it’s theme this week. In a time when we can look up information like the weather forecast so quickly and easily, it’s good to be reminded of the need to learn more about God’s creation ourselves.

Anyone who has known a sailor with “a weather eye” and who has also seen the inside of a weather bureau knows the difference between being weather-wise and being meteorologically accurate. The meteorologist is a slave to the barrage of weather-map material and mathematical data that bombards him from all over the world and keeps him from looking out of the window at the sky. On the other hand, a man with a weather eye wears his badge of wisdom gracefully; he has a ready alertness to cloud changes or he has the calm assurance that tonight’s rain will give way to a week of good weather. He has the gift of the upward glance, and his sky philosophy makes him a richer person.
