31 Days of Favorite Quotes: Something Better

An Experiment in Criticism was, as is usual for Lewis, an excellent read – one I really should make a re-read. Of course, there is the famous “I become a thousand men and yet remain myself” quote, but I’ve been pondering this one, which I think is very relevant for parents of teens who may not have the same tastes in books and music as they do.

The real way of mending a man’s taste is not to denigrate his present favourites but to teach him how to enjoy something better.

Of course, there’s the other side to it – that we parents should be willing to step outside our comfort zones and listen to or read some of their favorites in order to better understand and communicate with them. And we might find that there’s some truth, goodness, and beauty to be found even in the contemporary stuff at which we might be tempted to turn up our noses (preaching to myself here 😉 ).
