5 Favorite Christmas Books

Christmas1

It’s almost my favorite time of year, and I have some Christmas posts percolating! 🙂 I thought I would start by sharing some of our favorite read-alouds and audiobooks.

  1.  Keeping Holiday by Star Meade  is the book the older kids ask to read each year!  This Advent will be our fourth time through this allegorical story, in which the villain “Mr. Smith” keeps turning up like a bad penny. 😉 Keeping1
  2. The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree is a lovely picture book I remember from childhood, and when Miss A was little, my sister gave us a copy for Christmas. This year, I am adding another book illustrated by Barbara Cooney, The Story of Holly and IvyPerfect1
  3. A Child’s Christmas in Wales is a wonderfully descriptive and humorous short story based on Dylan Thomas’ own childhood memories. I love the audio version narrated by the author himself, but there is also a hardcover edition illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman! Wales1
  4. Christmas Day in the Morning tells how a young boy got up early one Christmas to give his father a special gift of love. This is another one we read together each year during our Advent Morning Times. Morning1
  5. Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is a favorite of many, of course, but I wanted to recommend the audio version read by my favorite British narrator, Simon Vance. I listened to it with the kids a couple of years ago, and hope to again this year, perhaps during the long drive to Grandmas’ place. 🙂 Carol1
