Inventors and Adventurers: 2017-2018 5th Grade Plans

This will be short and sweet as Mr. E will be doing AmblesideOnline Year 5 pretty much as scheduled, but I am making a few adjustments which I will note below. They recently changed the schedule to stretch out The Complete Book of Marvels over Years 5 and 6, and dropped two of the Year 5 biographies, which I think should allow me a bit of wiggle room. 😉

The Alexander Graham Bell biography I have, Always Inventing, can be read in a few weeks, so I’ve decided to schedule Carry On, Mr. Bowditch (on the free read list) in Term 1 (carrying it over to a few weeks of Term 2 if necessary). I’m also going to attempt Madam How and Lady Why again this year (it got dropped with Mr. D). Mr. E wants to read it – and all his books – himself; but I will read along too, and use AmblesideOnline’s study guides and Carol’s resources to help us understand and discuss it. I will schedule it at double pace, twice a week, in order to finish it in one year – we’ll see how it goes!

For math, he will finish Teaching Textbooks 5 and start 6. On our math drill days (usually Friday), he’ll also drill geography with the Stack the States and Countries apps.

I will introduce Latin this year using Getting Started with Latin , which I’ve had sitting around for a while – if possible, I’d like to do it with him. He’ll continue learning French with The Learnables.

For grammar, I’m going to have him finish the Memoria Press workbook he started last year, reinforced with Grammar Island (and we also drill grammar rules in Morning Time). We’ll work on written narrations more this year, and continue slowly through the Writing & Rhetoric: Fable book, hopefully getting to Narrative 1 at some point. Weekly dictation needs to be a priority, and I may get him started with a commonplace book once I see how things are going with everything else.

And he will also continue piano lessons, soccer, and parkour, as well as participate on a First Lego League Team. 🙂
