Morning Time Plans for Spring/Summer 2016

MT2016Here’s the plan for our next term! Morning Time tends to fizzle in the summer, so I’m anticipating that most of this will take us through until September. I do hope we’ll be more consistent that last year, though. 😉

Daily

  • Hymn: O God, Our Help in Ages Past by Isaac Watts
  • Prayer and Devotional Reading: continuing with Comforting Hearts, Teaching Minds by Starr Meade. I wrote about how we use it here.
  • Scripture Memorization: John 1:1-18 – In the beginning was the Word…
  • Poetry Memorization: If by Rudyard Kipling
  • Shakespeare Memorization: I think we’ll tackle the Prologue to Act 1 of Henry V – it’s long, but I love it!
  • Memory Work Review and Jokes
  • Folk Songs: I’m going to introduce a few Canadian folk songs, along with Wee Sing Fun ‘n’ Folk and French folk songs.
  • Poetry Enjoyment: We’ll listen to Longfellow’s The Song of Hiawatha together, as it’s on the AO schedule for both Mr. D and Mr. E this year (although I think it’s just the Childhood section listed for Year 3).
  • Grammar: Mad Libs M/W/F and Grammar Island with the boys T/Th (we haven’t been very consistent with GI, sigh)

Weekly

  • Church History: Trial and Triumph – only five chapters left, so I’ll have to decide what to read after we’re done – maybe a missionary bio.
  • Biography: Squanto by Feenie Ziner
  • Shakespeare: Henry V – we’ll start out reading the retelling in Stories from Shakespeare by Marchette Chute.
  • Artist Study: I bought the Monet Picture Study Portfolio at the convention, and spring/summer seems like a good time for his paintings. 🙂
  • Composer Study: Debussy, because we might as well immerse ourselves in Impressionists! And because I love his music. 🙂 I’ll definitely be watching this treasure with the kids: Leonard Bernstein conducting Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun.

  • Nature Study: We’ll either do one of the suggestions in The Curious Nature Guide or just our own thing. Composer and nature study may be the only Morning Time we do on Fridays, generally our “lighter” day.

  1. This looks wonderful! I didn’t know about this devotional by Meade but I’m thrilled to learn of it because my eldest is memorizing that Catechism right now. 🙂

Tell me more about the nature journal book!

    • I read about the nature book at Wildflowers and Marbles. It has some prompts for observation and recording in your journal – we’ve only done one so far. As Jen notes, there are a few references to “meditation” that are easily skipped.
