Patient Persistence

This should have been a Wednesdays with Words post, but I just didn’t get around to it yesterday. I haven’t posted one for a while, but I have been reading. Home Education is my current “teacher training” book, as I prepare and start Mr. L’s first grade year. And In Memoriam: A Tribute to Charlotte Mason has been an inspiring glimpse into Charlotte Mason’s life and work, and the impact she had on those who knew her. I posted about her “Masterly Inactivity” on Instagram last week, and here is another beautiful quote by one A. M. Harris (pg 82):

When I first had the privilege of knowing her – perhaps seven and twenty years ago – I was astonished, having regard to the position she already held, at the quietness of her manner, the gentleness of her speech, the absence of self-assertion in any form. She seemed rather like one who sought to know than one who was born to instruct. But presently, beneath all the courtesy and kindness that invited self-expression in others, one felt the strength of individual personality, of power, of knowledge, of purpose, and especially of patient persistence. To her the way she meant to go was plain before her; there was no need to hurry or struggle.

Also read/listened to recently:

  • Hubby: That Hideous Strength by C. S. Lewis – he says it’s pretty strange 😉
  • Me: Anna Karenina, on and off. This might be another two-year book for me, like Les Mis. But Tolstoy’s insights into human nature are amazing.
  • Miss A: Unbeknownst to me, she found and read my copy of Dorothy Sayers’ The Mind of the Maker and really enjoyed it – makes me want to try it again!
  • Mr. D:  The Shining Company by Rosemary Sutcliff at my request – he doesn’t readily pick up fiction on his own, but I didn’t want him to miss this beautiful, gut-wrenching story set right about where he’s at in history.
  • Mr. E: Book Scavenger by Jennifer Chambliss Bertman, his prize for completing our library’s summer book club.
  • Mr. L: I finished reading Charlotte’s Web to him last week, and he and Mr. E watched the movie together. 🙂
  • Little R: The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle
