The Simple Woman’s Daybook for July 18, 2016

For Today

Looking out my window…dusk and fireflies.
I am thinking…just three more weeks until a longish break! We can do it – with God’s help!
I am thankful…for a certain little boy who is 5 today. 🙂
One of my favorite things…sunsets
I am wearing…purple tee and jeans.
I am creating…school checklists for tomorrow in a bit.
I am listening to…Donna-Jean Breckenridge’s plenary talk from this year’s AO Conference: Renewing the Mind – as soon as I can figure out how to get it on my phone, that is.
I am hoping…to finish School Education this week.
I am learning…perseverance – I hope.
In my kitchen…pancakes for breakfast and a birthday cake which I’m pretty sure qualifies as a “wreck”. 😛 Glad I didn’t have to cook supper.
In the school room…it was a tough morning. 🙁
In my garden…the hostas are blooming but aren’t too healthy (I am a terrible gardener).

In the last couple of chapters of my School Education reading, Charlotte Mason has been comparing and contrasting the educations of John Ruskin and William Wordsworth, well-known men in her day. It’s a bit tough going, especially when I’m sleep-deprived and she assumes her readers are already familiar with those men. 😛 But I was sobered by the strong indictment Ruskin gave of his early education, the last line of which I quote here (emphasis mine):
My present verdict, therefore, on the general tenor of my education at that time, must be, that it was at once too formal and too luxurious; leaving my character at the most important moment for its construction, cramped indeed, but not disciplined; and only by protection innocent, instead of by practice virtuous.
A moment from my day…

Closing Notes: Hope you have a blessed week!
