I picked up an older edition of The Art of Teaching earlier this year, and was amazed by the quote on the back:
I didn’t get far then, but decided to pick it back up this week, and this passage from Chapter 2 caught my eye:
Highet is referring to professional teachers in this passage, but it has application for the homeschooling mother as well. Of course the difficulty is that we homeschooling moms are teaching – or at least administering – many different subjects at different levels. We can’t become proficient in all of them, and sometimes we’ll need to find outside help. But as much as we can, in as many areas as we can, we should seek to grow in knowledge and understanding. And this continuing education should be a natural, and sometimes even fun, way of life.
