Wednesdays with Words: Abiding for a Time

WWW-ladydusk1Dawn is without Internet access this week, and asked me to host Wednesdays with Words. I wanted to share a quote that our pastoral intern used in his sermon the other week on hiding, or treasuring, God’s Word in our hearts (Psalm 119:11). I thought it was a lovely quote at the time, and wrote down the key words so I could find it later. It comes from a book by Puritan Thomas Brooks, Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices which my husband has read and highly recommends. (I have not as yet, and I think I need to remedy that! 😉 )

This idea of serious and slow reading is most important as we read God’s Word, but it can be applied to other areas as well. I think the slow scheduling of books that Charlotte Mason encourages allows our children (and us) to dwell on characters and ideas for enough time to really understand them. And I would consider narration a form of meditation, as is writing quotes in a commonplace book. They help us internalize those wonderful ideas we come across so that they can actually transform our lives.

  1. I’ve linked a non fiction science bio I really enjoyed. It’s not the type of book I’d normally choose but I’d also been reading another in the same category & just enjoyed so much the connections between the two narratives. Love the new look of your blog. I posted a comment the other week but it didn’t show up for some reason.
