Wednesdays with Words: Mom as Coach

WWW-ladydusk2Morning Time has fallen by the wayside here for quite some time, and I knew we needed to get back to it. When I saw Pam Barnhill’s new e-book, Your Morning Basket, I thought it might give me some ideas and impetus, and I was right! I read it in two days, planned (planning sheets are part of the package) and printed what we need, and we start today. It was encouraging to not just read more “how-to’s” but also the why behind Morning Time. I especially loved her chapter on the importance of relationship, and this quote in particular:

My mom used to remind my sisters and I that we were a “family team”. I wasn’t always too excited about that – I’d rather be doing my own thing off by myself 😉 – but I needed to learn to live in community with others, and home was the place to practice that. Now that I have children of my own, I often feel more like a referee than a coach, ending fights and always pointing out what they’re doing wrong. I need a mindset change to see that we are all on the same team, and although I have a position of leadership, we are all learning and growing. Our goal should be the same as the Apostle Paul’s: “I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:14) Morning Time can be a tool to build family unity as we gather together to worship and grow in the knowledge of God and the world He has made.

Our morning time has been so sketchy for the past year plus but when we’ve done, it’s been such a blessing! Hoping to add that back in next week! It’s my fav part of educating!
