31 Days of Great Reads – Wrap-up Post

During the month of October, I’m posting brief reviews of some of my favorite books from the past couple of years: those that really touched my heart, gave me a new perspective, taught me something, or were just plain fun. Hopefully you will be inspired to add something to your to-read list. 🙂

This series has been a good challenge, and I’m glad to have done it, though it remains to be seen if I will try it again another year! I probably could not have finished it if I had not discovered I’d written more Goodreads reviews than I remembered, so maybe that will be an encouragement to be better about writing reviews. 😉 Today I thought I would share a few more books that haven’t been mentioned during this series yet.

I had only watched the movie, and while it is good, it leaves out or changes several things. I just loved this book – it was my top fiction read for 2012.

This was a read-aloud with the kids. It is the true story of the Berlin Airlift’s Operation Little Vittles. Wonderful examples of compassion, generosity and gratefulness amidst much suffering.

I have read a few of the Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries by Dorothy Sayers, and The Nine Tailors is my favorite so far. It’s set in the East Anglia region of England, with bell-ringers and mysterious happenings in the graveyard, and it had me guessing right up till the end.

“Horror” is not my usual genre, but I found this rather bizarre story strangely compelling, and loved the descriptions of the labyrinth under the Paris Opera House.

Another genre I don’t usually read, but it came highly recommended by my hubby. 🙂  In his words, “Characters with deep flaws but also with ‘True Grit’, or rugged determination to see things through to the end.” Great story – one part in particular had me on the edge of my seat!
