31 Days of Great Reads – Fit to Burst by Rachel Jankovic

During the month of October, I’m posting brief reviews of some of my favorite books from the past couple of years: those that really touched my heart, gave me a new perspective, taught me something, or were just plain fun. Hopefully you will be inspired to add something to your to-read list. 🙂

I read Fit to Burst when it first came out in 2012, and read it again this past Sunday and Monday. This book, and Rachel’s first book, Loving the Little Years, are two of the best parenting books I’ve ever read. They are deceptively short and easy to read, but pack a real punch. She is just so honest, down-to-earth, challenging and encouraging; and you know, with six kids of her own, that she is speaking from experience. This time through, I was especially challenged by her thoughts on the ways we can unintentionally undermine our children’s faith in God, how we should humbly learn from the mistakes we see others making and be willing to be learned from when we fail, and how we should lead by example instead of “bullying” our kids. I didn’t realize how much I needed to read this book again until I got into it – highly recommended!
