31 Days of Great Reads – For the Children’s Sake by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay

During the month of October, I’m posting brief reviews of some of my favorite books from the past couple of years: those that really touched my heart, gave me a new perspective, taught me something, or were just plain fun. Hopefully you will be inspired to add something to your to-read list. 🙂
Consider This is a great book, but assumes some familiarity with Charlotte Mason’s philosophy and methods. Miss Mason’s own writings are wonderful and deep, and should be read, but they can be intimidating. So far, I have only made it partway through School Education and A Philosophy of Education (and a little of Home Education), am reading Ourselves slowly with Miss A. For an introduction to her philosophy, I highly recommend For the Children’s Sake by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay (daughter of the late Francis Schaeffer). I read it years ago when A and D were little, and again last year. The life and work of Charlotte Mason is briefly introduced, followed by an inspiring overview of her philosophy and methods. It is a wonderful picture of what education can be in Christian homes and schools.
