31 Days of Great Reads – Nothing to Envy by Barbara Demick

During the month of October, I’m posting brief reviews of some of my favorite books from the past couple of years: those that really touched my heart, gave me a new perspective, taught me something, or were just plain fun. Hopefully you will be inspired to add something to your to-read list. 🙂

I read this last year. Here’s my review:

I knew so little about North Korea before reading this, and learned so much. The author does a wonderful job of interweaving the history, culture and politics of North Korea with the lives of six citizens who ended up defecting to South Korea. There is much suffering and tragedy, as well as a bittersweet romance; and the government’s brainwashing and control of the people are hard to comprehend. Not a book I can say I “enjoyed”, but very much worth the read.
