31 Days of Great Reads – The Moon-Spinners by Mary Stewart

During the month of October, I’m posting brief reviews of some of my favorite books from the past couple of years: those that really touched my heart, gave me a new perspective, taught me something, or were just plain fun. Hopefully you will be inspired to add something to your to-read list. 🙂

This summer, I read Mary Stewart’s This Rough Magic, and loved the descriptions of Corfu and the exciting storyline. Not wanting to leave Greece, I picked up The Moon-Spinners, which is set on the island of Crete. The heroine, Nicola, has arrived there on vacation, but finds herself involved in the perils of a young Englishman in hiding because he accidentally witnessed a murder. In a way, these books are sort of grown-up versions of the Nancy Drew mysteries – the plucky, smart heroine putting the clues together and surviving many dangers, culminating in a chase or fight (or both) at the end – but much better written! They make great summer (or anytime) reads, and I will definitely be trying more of her books.
A caveat: These books do contain some profanity, as well as a few scenes or conversations that were somewhat risqué – not something I would be comfortable with Miss A reading at this point.
