31 Days of Great Reads – Sun Horse, Moon Horse by Rosemary Sutcliff

During the month of October, I’m posting brief reviews of some of my favorite books from the past couple of years: those that really touched my heart, gave me a new perspective, taught me something, or were just plain fun. Hopefully you will be inspired to add something to your to-read list. 🙂

My sisters introduced me to Rosemary Sutcliff’s writing, and I have enjoyed several of her historical novels. Sun Horse, Moon Horse is her imagining of how the famous White Horse of Uffington in the Berkshire Downs of England was created. It is the story of a lonely and misunderstood young man who uses his artistic talent to save his tribe. It is beautifully written, believable and moving, and I loved it so much that I’ve read it twice in the past few years. Another of her books that I really loved was The Shining Company, set in 7th century Britain during the Saxon invasion. I should reread that one as well, and encourage Miss A to read it, as we are learning about that period of history in Ambleside Year 7 now.
