31 Days of Great Reads – Cotillion by Georgette Heyer

During the month of October, I’m posting brief reviews of some of my favorite books from the past couple of years: those that really touched my heart, gave me a new perspective, taught me something, or were just plain fun. Hopefully you will be inspired to add something to your to-read list. 🙂

Sometimes I need a funny, sweet, clean romance to relax with. Georgette Heyer’s Cotillion fit that bill for me. It is one of her many stories set during the Regency era in England. The heroine, Kitty, must choose to marry one of her cousins or forfeit her inheritance. She thinks she wants to marry the “playboy” cousin, Jack, so she convinces the sweet but slightly scatterbrained one, Freddy, to pose as her fiancé. Will the plan work or will Kitty find her feelings have changed…?

I will say that I have not enjoyed the other Heyer books I’ve read/listened to as much as Cotillion. The Grand Sophy and The Corinthian were ok, but I thought Lady of Quality was dreadful. I like my romantic heroes to be good guys, not barely-reformed “rakes”. 😉 But I’ve started The Nonesuch on audiobook, so I haven’t given up finding another great one yet. 🙂
