31 Days of Great Reads – A Night to Remember by Walter Lord

During the month of October, I’m posting brief reviews of some of my favorite books from the past couple of years: those that really touched my heart, gave me a new perspective, taught me something, or were just plain fun. Hopefully you will be inspired to add something to your to-read list. 🙂

As a girl of about 11 or 12, I read every book about the Titanic I could get my hands on. My dad even helped me make a model of the ship which I displayed at the annual homeschool “show and tell” evening. When the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic came around in 2012, I decided to reread A Night to Remember. Here’s what I wrote on Goodreads:
I have been fascinated by the Titanic since I was a girl, and A Night to Remember was a contributing factor to that fascination. Lord’s vivid prose and meticulous research make you feel as if you are there on that horrific night. I found myself shaking my head at the infuriating ignorance of the crew of the Californian only ten miles away, smiling at the occasional humorous anecdote, and at one point pounding my feet in frustration at the scene of half-full lifeboats drifting on the ocean while so many were perishing. Well worth the reread.
