Seven Quick Takes

Some fun stuff to share today! If you need some ideas for family game nights, check out Karen’s new series 52 Family Game Nights. In her second post of the series, she has some great advice on how to deal with a child who gets angry when they don’t win. We haven’t had a family game night yet this  year (need to work on that!) but there have been lots of chess matches involving dad and the oldest three kids. Mr. E has also done some of the Solitaire Chess challenges, and his skills are improving!

Miss A has been enjoying some of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series (she’s a fantasy fan). Right now, we’re limiting her to the YA part of the series or the books either we or my sister have read and think are appropriate. She surprised us the other night by producing a model of Discworld she had made out of felt while listening to Mort. 😀

My parents gave Little R a Water Wow! coloring book for Christmas. Each book has four different pages to color with a little water-filled pen, which can be refilled when needed. Once the page has dried, it can be colored again – and again. They have been very popular with L and R, and even Mr. E, who decided to get his own with some Christmas money. They’re a great way to occupy little ones, and I’m thinking a couple more might be in order for Valentine’s Day. 🙂

The Schole Sisters have a new podcast, and the introductory episode was wonderful! They discussed, among other things, what “schole” is, different ways it can be manifested in our homeschools, and how it relates to Charlotte Mason’s philosophy. If you are interested in “restful learning” with your kids, give it a listen!

If you need a new soup recipe to try, Cheesy Lasagna Soup is a hit here – Mr. E declares it’s his favorite! It’s what’s for dinner tonight, along with a crusty bread made by Miss A. 🙂

One of the habits I’m working on right now is preparing the kids’ checklists and updating my bullet journal the night before. I know from experience that the day goes better when that’s done in the evening rather than the morning, and Mystie’s post the other week confirmed this. Now I need to make sure I get it done early in the evening, and not procrastinate and then stay up too late. 😉

And here’s a sweet and silly peek at life with boys. Their expressions of brotherly love often turn into wrestling matches. 😀
