You never know when inspiration might strike! I wasn’t expecting to be motivated to be a bit more intentional with Little L’s kindergarten year by a book about music appreciation, but that’s what happened…
I had already been thinking about starting reading lessons with him, using The Ordinary Parent’s Guide to Teaching Reading. I’m also going to try out the free MEP Reception curriculum to introduce math concepts in a gentle way.
But this quote got me thinking again about the importance of nursery rhymes and children’s songs, something Cindy Rollins has talked about in her book and podcasts. We do read nursery rhymes from time to time, but I want to make them a more regular part of the day, along with some children’s songs (perhaps some Wee Sing). I’ve also started a list of the AmblesideOnline Year 0 books I haven’t read to Little L yet, as well as other not-to-be-missed picture books we have sitting on the shelves. I couldn’t resist buying the above copy of the ABC Book of Children’s Rhymes and Verse on Ebay (even though we have several nursery rhyme books already) because I loved pouring over it as a little girl. 🙂 I’m considering a “Mini Morning Time” for the little guys as a way to start the day with them while the others are doing their math, etc. I do read to them before quiet time and bedtime, but it’s usually something they choose – and they tend to have lots of repeats (which is fine) and not always be open to something different. This will be more of a Mommy-planned time. We shall see how it goes! 😉
Also read/listened to this week:
- Hubby: about halfway through Dickens’ Bleak House
- Me: The Witchcraft of Salem Village by Shirley Jackson – I’m assigning it to Miss A as a supplement to the AO Year 9 history
- Miss A: she’s on the second-to-last book of A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Penultimate Peril by Lemony Snicket
- Mr. D: Tom Sawyer and the latest issue of WORLDkids magazine
- Mr. E: listening to Little House in the Big Woods again 🙂
- Little L: I, Crocodile by Fred Marcellino (funny!)
- Little R: Curious George Learns the Alphabet by Margret and H. A. Rey – except I’ve only read half of it to him so far – it’s so long!
