During the month of October, I’m posting brief reviews of some of my favorite books from the past couple of years: those that really touched my heart, gave me a new perspective, taught me something, or were just plain fun. Hopefully you will be inspired to add something to your to-read list. 🙂
They Loved to Laugh holds a special place in my heart, because of the fond memories I have of listening to my mom read it aloud to my sisters and I. Earlier this year I decided it was time to read it to my own daughter. For some reason, she was not too keen on it, but once we got started, I think she really enjoyed it. A Quaker doctor brings orphaned Martitia to his household of five boisterous boys and their much more serious mother, sister and grandfather. Humorous antics abound (though I must say I thought the boys were a bit hard on poor Martitia). But the camaraderie of the brothers is touching, and there are some poignant parts – and, of course, romance! All in all, a lovely read.
