31 Days of Tackling the To-Do List: A Thing of Beauty

A thing of beauty is a joy forever.

John Keats

That is the quote that came to mind as I prepared to restore the little bookshelf that has been with me since childhood. I kept my collection of model cars on it, as well as the Titanic model my dad helped me make. And of course, books. When I got married, it was small enough to take with me. I love the unique design and the carved details, and the beautiful dark wood. Unfortunately, after all these years (and many more before my time), it was looking rather worn.

Help for a beloved old piece of furniture

This was something I had wanted to do for a while now, but I was afraid improving it’s appearance would involve stripping and refinishing which would not only be very time consuming, but also might damage some of the detailing. So I was excited when I came across Old English Scratch Cover, which did not need any prep beyond cleaning the piece. There seemed to be some remnants of paint or something in a few places, which I removed with rubbing alcohol. I was a bit concerned when it left whitish marks on the wood, but that disappeared after I applied the Scratch Cover (that one half-circle mark, probably from a cup, would not go away).

It’s not a perfect restoration, as you can see, but it’s so much better! 🙂
