When my sister came for a visit last month, I took her and Miss A to a couple of antique stores downtown. I found a lovely milk glass lamp base, but the shade that was on it at the store was not for sale. I looked a bit online, but decided to buy a plain white shade and cover it with fabric. Not wanting to buy fabric for just one shade, I looked through my stash but couldn’t find anything appropriate. Then I thought of a favorite dress I had worn as a girl. I was loathe to cut it up (hopefully my mom doesn’t faint if she reads this 😉 ), but it had been through four little girls and had several stains that were not coming out. Why not transform it into something I would see and enjoy every day? I found a tutorial at Momtastic, but it was a bit trickier than I expected, especially tracing the pattern while rolling the lampshade! And then some of the clothespins I used to keep it in place while the glue dried were also glued on – oops.
It seemed a bit plain, so I added some lace trim around the bottom – perhaps the top needs something, too? It may be a bit “retiring” as lampshades go, but it’s feminine, pretty and a literal piece of my childhood. 🙂
very sweet. I like it!
She didn’t faint. She can’t quite remember which dress it was 😉 She is wondering whether there are any pictures of it. How old were you when you wore it?
I’m pretty sure I’m wearing it in the picture with Grandma and Grandpa she had on the fridge. Pale pink dress with small white flowers and puffy short sleeves?
