Back to the Classics 2018 Wrap-Up Post

I did it! I read something for every category this year, so I’m eligible for three entries to the drawing over at Books and Chocolate! Thanks for hosting this, Karen! I also managed to actually read a few of the books listed in my original plan. 😉 Title links are to my Goodreads reviews.

  1. A 19th century classic: Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell was a short and sweet listen. 🙂
  2. A 20th century classic: Till We Have Faces by C. S. Lewis
  3. A classic by a woman author: Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen – I’m pretty sure an Austen novel a year should be a reading goal. 😉
  4. A classic in translation: The Little Prince was my “last-minute” read, as I realized I hadn’t read anything in translation all year, except the last half of Pinocchio!
  5. A children’s classic:  The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain
  6. A classic crime story, fiction or non-fiction: another Dorothy Sayers mystery: Busman’s Honeymoon (no, I’m not doing this series in order 😛 )
  7. A classic travel or journey narrative, fiction or non-fiction: Three Men in a Boat was delightful!
  8. A classic with a single-word title: I kind of listened to the Arkangel recording of Macbeth in the car with the family a few years ago, but didn’t count it because of distractions. So with our co-op goup doing it this year, and Miss A studying it this past term, I thought a re-read was in order.
  9. A classic with a color in the title: The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins
  10. A classic by an author that’s new to you: I’d never read anything by Evelyn Waugh before this year, and I’m not sure Brideshead Revisited – which is supposed to be his best – has made me want to read his other books.
  11. A classic that scares you: I was afraid Testament of Youth would be disturbing and sad, and it was, but it was also a fascinating glimpse in to life before, during, and after World War I.
  12. Re-read a favorite classic: Anne of Green Gables was our summer/early fall read-aloud. ♥

  1. What a nice accomplishment! Just FYI, the Close Reads podcast network has recordings of their discussions on Brideshead Revisited. I started it last year but was interrupted early in my reading and never Revisited it. I think I would like to read it and listen to the podcasts, as I find discussions help me. Are you going to participate in the 2019 reading challenge?

    • I should give those podcasts a listen. I think it was worth a read, just maybe not in high school – probably depends on the student and family, though. I am planning to do the 2019 challenge – hope to have a post up soon! 🙂
