Fall 2020 Morning Time Plans

We start our first term of the 2020/2021 school year next week, although I think all of us are loathe to say good-bye to summer…

Bible & Catechism: We’ll begin studying the Westminster Shorter Catechism with Training Hearts, Teaching Minds by Starr Meade (and continue memorizing it as well). I’ll have the boys take turns reading the Bible passages. We’ll also work on memorizing Romans 8:31-39.

Poetry: Coleridge is our poet this term. I have the Poetry for Young People collection of his poems, although I may read the whole of “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner”. I think we’ll learn “Something Childish, but Very Natural“, and perhaps a few stanzas of “Rime”.

Composer: We’ll learn about Robert Schumann and listen to some of his music. I think I’ll have the older three boys each learn one of his piano pieces as well.

Artist: Turner is our artist – we’ll study the paintings included in the SCM Picture Study Portfolio.

Nature Study: I plan to read a few pages from The Bird Feeder Book each week to help us all learn more about common backyard birds. 🙂

History: Answering the Cry for Freedom: Stories of African Americans and the American Revolution is a new book on the AmblesideOnline schedule, beginning in Year 4. Since none of my kids have read it, I decided to add it to our Morning Time. There may be a couple of the brief biographies, like the one of Sally Hemings, that I’ll just have the older two read on their own.

Geography: We’ll continue to learn about various countries and people groups and their spiritual needs with Window on the World.

Shakespeare: Love’s Labour’s Lost is our next play – which reminds me that I need to pre-read it…

Plutarch: Hopefully we’ll finish the Gracchi this term. E and L are also learning about Solon in co-op this year.
