Favorite Christmas Carols: Shepherd’s Pipe Carol

We found out yesterday that due to new restrictions, we will be spending another Christmas at home instead of with family in Canada. That has left me feeling rather blue, and so I thought as one way to cheer myself up, I would share some of my favorite carols on the blog this week.

James Galway’s brilliant flute playing was part of the soundtrack of my childhood, and one of the carols I looked forward to hearing every Christmas on our classical music station was his rendition of the Shepherd’s Pipe Carol by John Rutter. The lyrics may be rather imaginative and mix the star into the shepherds’ part of the Christmas story, but it is just such a joyful tune. I found a fun video of it apparently from the mid ’80s – the sound and picture quality aren’t great, but the choir robes are priceless, especially the choir boys’ ruffs. 😀
