The Simple Woman’s Daybook for September 9, 2019

For Today

Looking out my window…dark now, but it was a lovely day.
I am thinking…the next six weeks is gonna be really busy…
I am thankful…for a very good first day of school – perhaps the best we’ve ever had! There were rough spots, of course, and not everything got done (French :/), but the general pleasantness made up for it. And Miss A made a Panera run for still-warm chocolate chip cookies just after lunch. β™₯
One of my favorite things…when these two are getting along. They had a whole story-line going during our walk last week, involving all the creatures that supposedly haunt this woods.
I am creating…well, I put together these portable containers for the boys for the new school year – some new supplies, and some (like the markers) found around the house.
I am wearing…blue shirt, khaki capri pants.
I am listening to…Nikolai Kapustin, another new-to-me composer I’ve discovered through Year of Wonder. I love his fusion of classical and jazz.
I am hoping…to go to bed soon…
I am learning…that “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
In my kitchen…simple suppers are definitely what we need right now – pork chops and gnocchi tonight.
In the school room…Mr. R gave his first formal narrations today, and did very well. He even surprised me by describing how the smoke rising from the boy’s cabin “kept the sky up” in the first chapter of Paddle to the Sea. β™₯
In my garden…not doing too well, probably mostly due to my neglect. πŸ™
Post Script
Hubby, Miss A, and I have been getting a lot of food for thought from the podcasts Mortification of Spin and The Briefing recently. Definitely counts as Current Events!
Shared Quote
Beguiled thus with delight of novelties,
And natural desire of country’s state,
So long they read in those antiquities,
That how the time was fled, they quite forgot,
Till gentle Alma seeing it so late,
Perforce their studies broke, and them besought
To think, how supper did them long await.
So half-unwilling from their books them brought,
And fairly feasted, as so noble knights she ought.
Edmund Spenser, The Faerie Queene, Book II, Canto X (The Elfin Knight, updated and annotated by Toby J. Sumpter)
A moment from my day…first-day pics with the books they’re most excited about/interested to read.
Closing Notes
Thanks for reading! πŸ™‚
