Yesterday, I was about ready to poke my eyes out again over what little progress L is making in his reading lessons. Christmas break probably didn’t help, but he just doesn’t seem to be grasping how to sound things out, and often forgets his letter sounds. But you would think after already teaching three to read I would be a little more patient. 😉 Anyway, coming across this quote from St. John of Kronstadt in the Lost Tools of Writing Teacher Guide was timely:
And then the following paragraph in the guide:
It can be humbling to admit this, but sometimes our haste as teachers inoculates our students against what we want them to learn because it leads to irritation and fuming – and that not always inwardly! It would be much better to thoroughly learn five lessons than to be frustrated by ten.
Ouch.
