31 Days of Tackling the To-Do List: Not Perfect, But Better

Many of the projects I’ve been working on are things I’ve wanted to do for some time, but others, like this one, have more recent origins. I think we have had this old side table since shortly after we were married and desperate for cheap furniture. 😉 It has been out in the garage for the last several years, as I didn’t want it in the house and would have just thrown it away, but hubby thought it could be used to store stuff out there. Since discovering Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, I have been looking at furniture I thought unsightly and/or unusable with new eyes – maybe it just needs some paint! Chalk paint is not cheap, but a little can go a long way, as I discovered when painting the dining room chairs (which I will blog about next week). I ended up buying a couple more colors to try, including this can of Napoleonic Blue (gotta love a name like that 😀 ).

The side table is a strange mixture of dovetailed drawers, laminate and particle board, and pretty detailing on the front. It was quite dirty (I won’t mention all the spider egg sacks I vacuumed off…). There were also some cracks in the laminate and several strange little holes like someone had stuck a pin or small nail in it. I used the 3M Patch Plus Primer to repair them as I didn’t have wood filler and it said on the packaging it could be used on wood. I found that the paint seemed to resist full coverage in some areas, despite several coats, so the result is kind of a distressed look without the actual work of distressing. 😛 I am not thrilled with my waxing job as it seems lighter in some areas that others, though I have read that it’s harder to get a consistent look with the darker colors of chalk paint. There also seems to be some stuff trapped in the finish in places (sigh). But it does look much better and can function as a side table again, as long as that cracked back is against a wall. 😉
