Timeline Narration

I had put off starting a timeline with Mr. E, but decided today was the day. There are so many ideas out there for timelines, Century Charts and such, and it can be rather overwhelming. One thing I am slowly learning is that keeping it simple and being consistent is the best way to make progress. So with that in mind, I have decided not to get hung up about doing a timeline exactly the way Charlotte Mason might have done it, and just do something that will (hopefully) work for us and achieve the same ends.

So far the Ambleside Year 2 history readings have focused mainly on the Kings of England, so I printed these timeline figures of the Kings and Queens of England. I also printed a simple timeline from Guest Hollow. Mr. E cut out the figures and glued the ones we’ve already read about on the timeline. He and Miss A exchanged a bit of banter about some of the kings, as she is also covering the same time period in Year 7. 🙂

I asked him what he remembered, and with a bit of prompting I got a sentence to write beside the corresponding picture for some of the kings. Now the plan is to establish the habit of taking out the timeline binder when we read, gluing in the appropriate figure, and recording a sentence or two of his narration.

I’ll be keeping my eye out for more pictures of people and events he’ll be reading about to print and have on hand. I’m hoping this timeline will help Mr. E get a sense of the flow of history, as well being a record of what he has learned.
