Scholé in Our Home {April 16, 2016}

schole2

Scholé of Intention: We finished (well, mostly finished) Term 2 this week. There are a few books to catch up on during break week, but that’s one of the benefits of having those weeks. 🙂 Our regular pattern of six-weeks-on, one-week-off works most of the year, but Term 3 is going to be interspersed with VBS, church camp and family vacations, so things won’t be so tidy. And there might not be much of a break between the end of this “school year” and the next. But that’s OK (or at least that’s what I’m trying to persuade myself 😉 ). As Sarah Mackenzie reminds us in Teaching from Rest:

God did not give you nine months a year in which to educate your children – He gave you twelve.

The flexibility of homeschooling is a wonderful thing!

Scholé of Method: I appreciate the restful Charlotte Mason/Ambleside Online method of focusing on one composer, one artist, and one Shakespeare play each term (although I don’t usually follow AO’s suggested schedule). We studied Van Gogh this past term, using the Picture Study Portfolio from Simply Charlotte Mason. Even though we didn’t do picture study every week, we were able to get to know seven of his paintings.

I started planning our Morning Time for Term 3 today – hoping to post more on that sometime next week!

Scholé of Outcome: The last few days have been simply smashing weather-wise, so yesterday I packed up a lunch and took the kids to a nearby nature preserve for a picnic, a walk, and some nature study. The older kids also drew in their nature notebooks (I made an entry in mine later on). It was really lovely, and something I should do more often. 🙂
