Wednesdays with Words: Faces and Voices

So the book I mentioned “foolishly” getting from the library on Monday is Sherry Turkle’s Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age. I had heard about the book before, but Anne Bogel’s post pushed me over the edge – not that I need much pushing. 😉  Unfortunately it’s a new book, so I only have it for two weeks – which means I’ll probably get (more) behind on some of my other reading. But she’s putting into words things I’ve known and felt intuitively, and convicting me of areas to change and improve, so it looks to be a very worthwhile read. And there have been several passages worthy of recording in my commonplace, like this one:

And as a person who often struggles to put her thoughts into words and communicate clearly, this passage was so encouraging:

…it is often when we hesitate, or stutter, or fall silent, that we reveal ourselves most to each other. And to ourselves.

With a teenager in the house, conversation skills are even more important, and I am hopeful this book will have some great advice.

Some books read this past week:

  • Hubby: A Briefer History of Time by Stephen Hawking – reading along with Miss A and I so we can discuss the ideas together. 🙂
  • Me: Henry V by William Shakespeare
  • Miss A: Outlaws of Time by N.D. Wilson – she loved it!
  • Mr. D: George Washington Carver by David Collins – one of his new books this term.
  • Mr. E: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
  • Little L: The Tale of Benjamin Bunny by Beatrix Potter
  • Little R: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault
